Strange guys, those Romans
Who remembers the comics of Asterix and Obelix, the two Gauls who fought the Romans with their brave fellow villagers and invariably repulsed every attack with the legendary words, "Strange guys, those Romans...
Strange they may have been, but not crazy. Archaeological finds in and near Cuijk have made that clear. In Roman times, Cuijk was a castellum, an army place where Roman soldiers stayed. Ceuclum, as Cuijk was then called, was important because it was on the route from Tongeren to Nijmegen. At Ceuclum, the armies crossed the bridge, which had been built by the Romans themselves. The remains of the bridge were later found in the Meuse River.
