About Maasheggen Unesco
UNESCO has designated the Meuse Maasheggen as a biosphere reserve. With this, the Maasheggen participates in the international Unesco program Man and the Biosphere (MAB).
Biosphere areas are areas with a special status where man and nature live together. Where there is intensive cooperation on sustainable development and goals in the areas of economy, nature, tourism and water. This award of status makes the Maasheggen part of a worldwide network of hundreds of Unesco biosphere reserves in 120 different countries. For Unesco, biosphere reserves are important model areas within which Unesco's mission can be carried out at the local level.
