About Maasheggen UNESCO
A special recognition for the Maasheggen area. UNESCO has designated the Maasheggen as a biosphere area. In doing so, the Maasheggen participates in UNESCO's international Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program. Biosphere areas are areas of special status where man and nature live together. Where there is intensive cooperation on sustainable development and goals in the areas of economy, nature, tourism and water. With this status award, the Maasheggen becomes part of a worldwide network of more than 650 UNESCO biosphere reserves in 120 different countries. For UNESCO, biosphere reserves are important model areas within which UNESCO's mission can be carried out at the local level.
The Maasheggen is the only biosphere reserve in the Netherlands.
