About Maasheggen Unesco

UNESCO has designated the Maasheggen as a biosphere reserve. As a result, the Maasheggen participates in UNESCO’s international Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program.
Biosphere reserves are areas with special status where people and nature coexist. They are places where there is intensive collaboration on sustainable development and on goals related to the economy, nature, tourism, and water. With this designation, the Maasheggen becomes part of a global network of hundreds of UNESCO biosphere reserves in 120 different countries. For UNESCO, biosphere reserves are important model areas where UNESCO’s mission can be carried out at the local level.
