The ferry landing at Maashees

You are now standing at the old ferry landing at Maashees. From here you could take the foot ferry to Aijen in Limburg until about 1950.

Well before the Romans conquered our land, the Meuse was already a more important connection, although you shouldn't imagine much about shipping at that time. Only from Roman times onwards were more, especially small, boats seen on the Meuse. The Meuse was then still very wide and shallow. This made navigation on the Meuse a challenge; when the water level was low, boats had to be rowed upstream or pulled from the water's edge.
