The Metworstrennen
Vortum-Mullem is best known for the Metworstrennen, the horse races held every year on Carnival Monday at the Vortums Veld, the road between Sambeek and Vortum-Mullem. At the event, Boxmeer "youngsters" compete for the title King of the Metworst.
The name 'Vortum' indicates a 'settlement near a ford', in the St. Jansbeek. The name 'Mullem' is derived from 'habitation near the mill'.
From west to east, the elongated village consists of the old nuclei of Mullem (which was under Sambeek until 1942), Vortum and Klein-Vortum (which were under Vierlingsbeek). The nuclei have grown together and now clearly form one village with the church and school in the middle.
