Maasheggen braiding 2019: six months away

It has now been six months since the 2019 Maasheggenvlechten 2019 Championship. The weather was brutally bad and maybe that's why you missed it. A good reason to go on repeat. No, we are not going to braid, but watch how some 40 teams from home and abroad defied the weather gods and delivered a handsome piece of work. During an approximately 2-hour walk through Maasheggen in the area known locally as The Middelsteeg Meadows, we will enjoy this unique landscape.

Along the way the IVN guides can tell you all about the nature and history of this area and what the future plans are. Maasheggen weaving has already taken place several times in this area and we get a good picture of how such a hedge develops and why our ancestors attached so much importance to it. We are right to keep it alive.

That the Maasheggen is a breeding ground for specific species of flora and fauna will certainly not go unmentioned. We will not give away everything and invite you to join us on this free walk organized by KBO and IVN. We start at 't Veerhuis near Oeffelt. And as usual, KBO-Boxmeer invites you afterwards for a cup of coffee/tea. Further info at Juul de Bont, tel. 0478-631800 or Piet Schoenmakers, tel 0485-520876.

IVN: The Night of the Bat

IVN: The Night of the Bat

IVN: The Night of the Bat

Searching for bats with the bat detector

Bat spotting! This is the Night of the Bats. This Friday evening we will spot bats under the guidance of Sjef Demaret and Martien Bongers of the bat working group of the IVN. We will be guests at The Protestant Church at Veerstraat 24 in Boxmeer. At 8 p.m. we are expected there for an explanation about the cycle of the bats and after about half an hour we will go outside at Castle Boxmeer to spot the bats.

Many people are afraid of bats and would rather see them go than come. Yet that is a shame because bats are extremely useful. They eat half their own body weight in insects every night. Nor do they harm humans. After all, bats don't fly in your hair or suck blood! By telling a little about bats and how and where they live, we hope to make people aware of this and prevent bats from being driven away unnecessarily.

What could you tell about the largest mammal family in the world? Bats are mammals that fly like birds, they have claws on their wings, find their prey and their way by echolocation and sleep upside down! So the bat is a special animal and because they live at night and are almost black we rarely realize they are flying around us!

The bat species found with us in the Netherlands are all protected, with species such as the dwarf bat and the slightly larger late flyer always to be found, the other species are somewhat rarer. Each species has its own habitat, such as in gardens and forests along lanes or over lakes and canals. Detecting these mammals is done with a bat detector: a device with which you can hear their transmission frequency. Each species has its own sound.

N.B. In bad weather, rain or storm, the bat night unfortunately does not take place, because then they fly much less or not at all. If in doubt, please call: 0485-576558 or 06-23827733.

IVN: walking across the Oeffelter Meent

IVN: walking across the Oeffelter Meent

IVN: walking across the Oeffelter Meent

Your summer morning walk through an ancient cultural landscape!

This trail walk goes through part of the Maasheggen area, namely the Oeffelter Meent and Meerkampen. Already from the dike we have a beautiful view of small plots of land bordered by the "natural barbed wire" of the Maasheggen.

The Maasheggen consist of hawthorn, blackthorn, cardinal's hat, among others. As early as the Middle Ages, farmers braided the thorny bushes, thus separating plots and keeping livestock within limits. Barbed wire did not yet exist. The Maasheggengebied is one of the oldest cultural landscapes of the Netherlands. Unesco has designated the Maasheggengebied as a biosphere reserve! First we walk a bit through the Oeffelter Meent, a slightly sloping river dune complex. The Oeffelter Meent owes its name to the then common grasslands on the dry river dunes of sand and gravel. The vegetation is kept short by draft horses and Scottish Highlanders. On the bare spots germinate seeds of special plants such as small purslane, thistle.

We walk through small meadows with flowering plants. The meadows are lined with the Maasheggen. The hedges are a paradise for the many birds. The birds can find their food, nesting and shelter. Breeding birds include warbler, blackbird, collared redstart.

We pass the Oeffeltse Raam, which in 1995 was transformed from a straight course into a meandering stream that flows into the Meuse. The water quality has improved and plants and animals benefit! We also walk a bit along the Meuse. Here the Meuse has been given room again, it has been cleared of groynes and boulders and we can see the calved banks.

Join us for a walk in this beautiful natural area! We start at 10 a.m. from the P. place at tennis court De Rijtjes in Oeffelt. The walk is free, with possibly a voluntary contribution for coffee/tea. Tip: wear waterproof shoes. Further info from Carla Hendriks, tel. 06-49975736 or Nell v.d. Velden, tel. 06-20618154.

Zev sings: Music on the Meuse

Zev sings: Music on the Meuse

Zev sings: Music on the Meuse

On Saturday, June 29, ZEV (Zanggroep Evergreen Vierlingsbeek) is organizing Music on the Meuse. Music on the Meuse will take place in the now-familiar Meuse Meadow near the bridge over the Mill Brook by the ferry ferry.

As always, spectators can enjoy music in a wide variety of styles, in a special and atmospheric ambiance. With much love and attention, a wonderful program has been put together with smartlappenkoor Van Heure Zinge, harmony De Herleving, multi-instrumentalist Luuk Lenders, 60s band Tin Soldiers and of course not forgetting ZEV and ZEV-light. Let us surprise you!

At 7:30 p.m. you will be welcomed at the entrance by the surprising sounds of Luuk Lenders. Luuk is known for his creative folk music with unusual flutes, accordion, shruti box, percussion, harmonica, rubber ducks, ping pong balls and homemade instruments. His performances are adventurous and virtuoso, touching and funny and put a smile on your face - a magical experience for young and old!

Contact

Afterwards, the public is invited to move toward the pontoon, which has been sailed in especially for Music on the Meuse. Here, starting at 8 p.m., you can enjoy performances by Van Heure Zinge, Harmonie de Herleving, ZEV and ZEV-Light.

Smartlappenkoor Van Heure Zinge is a special choir and not only because of its composition. A company of eighty men and women on one stage is impressive in itself. However, it is mainly the special, somewhat different repertoire that distinguishes VHZ from other smartlappen choirs. VHZ is conducted by Frenk van Aggelen.

Harmonie de Herleving, founded in 1874, is a thriving musical society that is at the center of the community of Vierlingsbeek and Groeningen. The wind band has a modern and appealing repertoire. At Music on the Meuse, the wind instruments will certainly sound fairy-tale across the Meuse River.

The wind band is under the direction of Eric Roefs.

ZEV and ZEV-Light, the organizing association, is characterized by a varied singing repertoire of 4- and 5-part songs, recognizable and sometimes unrecognizable. The 55 singers are under the direction of Nancy Meijer.

Enjoying the sounds of the 60s band Tin Soldiers, we closed the evening. A great band for anyone in the mood for an old-fashioned party. Tin Soldiers know how to put on a great show. They play of course the very best songs from the most beloved era of pop music; From English beat music to Woodstock... Swinging mod-rock from The Kinks and The Who, American West-coast hippie tunes from Lovin Spoonful and Crosby Stilss Nash & Young, greasy soul from Otis Redding and Sam&Dave....

She reminds her audience how important nature is to all of us and shows beautiful images of nature as we have almost forgotten it already.

Trees and plants are the basis of life and well-being of animals and humans. People used to know the effects of medicinal herbs and where to find them. Now only a few do. Today we have forgotten much of our "nature. That is a pity. Trees are cut down and fields sprayed full of poison. It is time for a change. Fortunately, a new trend is underway and permaculture, food forests and organic vegetable gardens are back in vogue and people want real food on our plates again. We're not there yet, but this lecture is sure to inspire you to contribute to a more natural life as well.

In the early 14th century, farmers were given the rights of use over the plots along the Meuse River. They demarcated them with hawthorn hedges to keep the cattle inside. The invention of barbed wire effectively made these hedges obsolete, but in recent years there has been renewed interest in this unique cultural landscape and the hedges are being restored, for example during the annual Maasheggenvlechten competition in March.

During this walk, the hedges are likely to be in beautiful bloom. Attention is also paid to the Oefeltse Raam, reconstructed in 2015 and largely returned to its old bed.

IVN gathers at 9:30 at the Veerhuis, Veerweg 2 in Oeffelt, for coffee or tea. They leave at 10:00, on return there is soup. All included for € 6.50. They trek partly through meadows, so wear waterproof footwear. Dogs are not allowed. For further information, tel. 0485-361313
