About the Maasheggen
In the Land van Cuijk, on the border of North Brabant and Limburg, braided hedges have been used for thousands of years to demarcate pastures. This has created a landscape you see nowhere else: The Maasheggen. It is the oldest cultural landscape in the Netherlands and it even has UNESCO Man & Biosphere status.
The mosaic of hedges, meadows, drinking pools and old pollarded trees is beautiful to see and is home to a special variety of plant and animal species. The hedges are still functional: they keep cattle in and predators out. That culture and nature have been intertwined in the same way and on such a large scale through the braid hedges for centuries is something you see in few other places in the Netherlands.
