Collective Delta plan improves biodiversity
Published: Monday, June 07, 2021
The Collective Delta Landscape Plan is a group of people committed to agricultural nature management and increased biodiversity in The Maasheggen.
During the course of this year, a number of measures will be implemented at participants in the Collective that aim to improve biodiversity.
The measures implemented, by agreement, are:
- Improve herb-rich grassland
Herbs in a grassland are not only beautiful but also useful for the cows. Together with Natuurbalans a method has been developed to get more herbs in the grassland. First, strips of grass are milled, then plowed and finally sown with a perennial herb mix from Biodivers. - Nesting boxes for the ring sparrow
Nesting boxes for the ring sparrow will be hung at strategic locations. - More trees in the hedge
Trees are inseparable from The Maasheggen. In some places the trees of the past are still in the hedge. In other places, trees can still be planted, which are 2-year-old woodland plants. This is planted in the hedge and can be managed in the future as an overstory or pollarded tree. Solitary trees can also be planted for use in pastures or fields.
The Collective is looking for locations where new trees can be planted. - Give the solitary bee a hand
In collaboration with bee experts, the bee hump was devised. The bee hump is a pile of clay, which is cut off tightly on one side after placement. Precisely these vertically cut areas are of interest to the solitary bee. - Hedge Restoration
A healthy and vital hedge provides plenty of shelter for all kinds of animal species. Therefore, the Collective restores hedges with holes. This is done by filling in the gaps with native hawthorn. - New hedges
Hedges provide a natural separation of a plot. A flowering hedge is beautiful to see, but also the ideal nesting place for birds. Therefore, the Collective is looking for locations where a hedge can be planted. Of course, arrangements will be made in advance about management. The hedge will consist of 80% native hawthorn, supplemented with some native species from the Maasheggen area.
