Podcast on importance of hedgerows in landscape

Published: Wednesday, May 29, 2024

The Centrum Agrarische Geschiedenis and Kenniscentrum Immaterieel Erfgoed Nederland have created a podcast about the importance of hedges in the landscape. Like the Maasheggen.

For example, hedges provide a home for insects and birds. In agriculture, too, hedges have numerous benefits: they break the wind along fields, reduce soil dispersal and desiccation, limit runoff and improve natural drainage.
For centuries, then, hedges have been used as natural boundaries. Yet, for various reasons, the hedge is increasingly disappearing from our landscape. And we need to do something about that, argue Kenneth Rijsdijk and Jaap Dirkmaat in the podcast Water & Land. Rijsdijk and Dirkmaat talk to Jet Bakels, researcher at the Netherlands Knowledge Center for Intangible Heritage, about hedgerows, their superpowers and what it will take to reintroduce them into the landscape.
Rijsdijk was a guest speaker at the Biodiversity Day in Oeffelt in May 2023. Dirkmaat represents Vereniging Nederlands Cultuurlandschap on the steering committee of Maasheggen UNESCO.
