Foundation Landschapsbeheer Boxmeer organizes on Sunday, March 10, for the 18th time the Dutch Championship Maasheggenvlechten. For the second consecutive time Portaal de Vilt on the Beugenseweg in Oeffelt will be the setting for this event. The record number of 55 teams will compete that day for the challenge trophy De Gouden Hiep.
That interest in the Maasheggen UNESCO site in general and in hawthorn hedge plaiting in particular is growing shows the number of participating teams. For the first time in the existence of this championship, more than 55 teams have registered for the competition. This means more than 200 braiders will be at work on March 10.
In addition to teams participating in the competition, there will also be demonstration teams braiding. The Maasheggen style is specific to the area along the Maas River between Maashees and Cuijk. Elsewhere in Europe other styles are braided. During the upcoming NK English, Irish, a Belgian and a Frenchman will show their specific regional braiding. The demonstration team from the Brabants Landschap will show the public how Carthusian style braiding is done.
