Recognize plants and animals yourself?

Published: Wednesday, July 26, 2023

In the UNESCO Easter Hedge Area, regular counts are taken by volunteers from IVN and many others. This way we know better and better how our birds, plants and animals are doing in the Maasheggen.

With a number of free apps, you can also easily identify birds, plants and other animals yourself. Below we highlight a few of them:

  • For birders, Merlin is now available for your smartphone. This app allows you to
    • Recognize birds based on a sound you hear (Sound ID)
    • Recognize birds based on a photo you took (Photo ID)
    • Scroll through the list of birds which birds are currently at your location (Explore)
    • Based on a few simple questions, quickly see which bird you see in front of you (Step by step ID)

Merlin is primarily a digital bird field guide that can help you identify new birds. https://merlin. allaboutbirds.org

  • The app Obsidentify allows you to recognize a plant or animal by taking or uploading a photo. ObsIdentify recognizes only wild animals and plants. Do not use the app for selfies, people, pets, house or garden plants. https://observation. org/apps/obsidentify/
