Signs UNESCO Maasheggen along roads in Boxmeer and Cuijk
Recently 'brown signs' have been placed along 10 provincial and municipal roads in the Land van Cuijk referring to the UNESCO site De Maasheggen. The signs mark the location of and access to the only biosphere reserve in the Netherlands.
The ten chosen locations make it clear that the Maasheggengebied is much larger than many people think. The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve runs from the Kraaijenbergse Plassen in Linden/Beers to the Vortum and Groeningse Bergjes in the south of Land van Cuijk.
The scene on the 'brown board' depicts the specialness of De Maasheggen: it is the unique combination of nature (including the characteristic hedgerow landscape), biodiversity (plants and animals), agriculture, living and working and recreation (cycling, hiking, water sports) that have earned the area the status of UNESCO Man & Biosphere for several years. The important difference with, for example, a World Heritage Site is that in a biosphere area not only is cherished what is already there, but also (sustainable) development is and remains possible, taking into account all the aforementioned interests.
The ten UNESCO signs are or will be along the following roads:
- Mgr Geurtsstraat in Maashees;
- Staaijweg, towards Vierlingsbeek;
- Radio Road, in the direction of Vortum-Mullem;
- Ferry sidewalk in Sambeek;
- Sint Anthonisweg, towards Boxmeer;
- Gennep provincial road, direction Oeffelt;
- provincial road Oeffelt;
- Waaistraat in Cuijk;
- Hapsebaan, direction Cuijk;
- provincial road N321, near Beers.
