Butterfly Chapel in the Maasheggen

Published: Friday, April 17, 2020

In the yard of De Schutkooi in Vortum-Mullem, the Butterfly Chapel was recently inaugurated. The chapel is an initiative of Piet Lamers, father of organic dairy farmer and owner of De Schutkooi, Eric Lamers. The latter was immediately enthusiastic about the idea: "It's a nice place to go, especially for those who are lonely."

The chapel was built with stones from an old German brick factory. Inside the chapel is a statue of SInt Brigida, the patron saint of cattle. Holes were made at the back of the chapel for insects to nest.
The choice of a Butterfly Chapel is not accidental. In addition to being an organic dairy farmer, Eric Lamers is also a butterfly farmer, the first in the Netherlands. "Butterflies bud when they receive warmth and love. It works the same way with people. From warmth and love everyone buds," Eric Lamers said in an interview in De Bok of April 10, 2020.
