Since Lars van Peij from Oeffelt, an employee of Vereniging Nederlands Cultuurlandschap and warm advocate of De Maasheggen, was diagnosed with Huntington's disease, his life -and that of his family- has been turned upside down. Although he knows there is no cure for the disease, Lars is not sitting back. On the contrary, he started the MaasheggenMooi campaign with great enthusiasm, raising money for a good cause: strengthening the Maasheggen area.

Lars recently walked the Kennedymars in Sittard and has already raised a good 15,000 euros. With that money -and subsequent donations- he wants to plant new hedges in De Maasheggen. He knows where the hedges should be and has already visited growers to collect plant material.
"I know from my work at the Vereniging Nederlands Cultuurlandschap that hedges are the solution to many big challenges," Lars van Peij says of his choice of The Maasheggen as a charity. "They contribute to biodiversity, capture CO2, provide more soil life and a beautiful landscape to enjoy. Although two hundred thousand kilometers of hedges disappeared during my parents' lifetime, I have noticed time and again during my work that Maasheggen farmers are actually proud of their hedges. Anyone who cycles or walks through Maasheggen is delighted by the many birds that inhabit the hedges. The hedges provide rest, protection and food for many species.
This goal is concrete and tangible - the money goes towards native hawthorn hedges in the Maasheggen. Because then together we can really leave something behind!"
