Minister visiting The Maasheggen

Published: Friday, June 11, 2021

Outgoing Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven (Education, Culture and Science) paid a working visit to the UNESCO site De Maasheggen in early June, fulfilling a promise she made during the presentation of the national Heritage Volunteer Award to the hedge weavers of the Maasheggen in December 2020.
Van Engelshoven was informed about the unique craft of (Maas) hedge weaving and looked at the hedge landscape together with volunteers and board members of foundation Landschapsbeheer Boxmeer.

Van Engelshoven also took a look at works of art that belong to Kapellenbaan, a route along special art treasures in the Maasheggengebied, among others. She was briefed by initiator Antoine Achten.

Van Engelshoven herself was very impressed with the Maasheggengebied and the diligent work of the hedge weavers. "A beautiful example of our intangible heritage and how special that they show and pass on the art of hedge weaving," she tweeted after her working visit.
