Green chapel as a work of art in The Maasheggen

Published: Wednesday, April 10, 2024

The Kapellenbaan is being expanded with a new, special work of art: "The Primitive Chapel. The new work of art on the Maasstraat in Groeningen has been available to visit since March 28.

The work of MONOLAB Architects (Jan-Willem van Kuilenburg) is an unusual combination of rebar and naturally growing hawthorn. In the middle of "the green chapel" is a boulder, which allows visitors to sit and enjoy the surroundings.
The artwork is a "work in progress"; in other words, the speed at which the hawthorn grows determines when the work will be finished. So it will take some time before the work has its final form.
The artwork was created in cooperation with Staatsbosbeheer and was made possible by Jeroen Haentjes Tuinen en Meer and Stichting Landschapsbeheer Boxmeer. The latter organization also takes care of the maintenance of the green chapel.
