Future colleagues De Wijers to visit
In early September, an administrative delegation from De Wijers visited De Maasheggen. The area in Belgian Limburg, also known as "the land of 1001 ponds," will soon apply for recognition as a UNESCO Man & Biopshere area. The delegation was particularly curious about how De Maasheggen has approached the nomination, what has been achieved over the past five years and what lessons have been learned. The delegation also used the working visit, led by Piet Hopman of Staatsbosbeheer, to take a walk through the Maasheggengebied.
Incidentally, De Wijers is not the only Flemish area that is a candidate to become a biosphere reserve. The cross-border Kempenbroek in northeastern Belgian Limburg has also been nominated.
